Evacuation Procedures
While medical help is on the way, get the casualty and the gear ready to move: secure weapons, choose and prep a litter, package the casualty, and stage everyone in the right order.
What to remember
- Secure the casualty's weapon and gear per unit SOP or mission, clear and render safe any weapon that goes with him, and do not evacuate explosives with him.CLS M20 Slides, PDF p.6
- Other unit members prep litters and evacuation gear while treatment continues, and you pick a litter by platform, terrain, injuries and what you have.CLS M20 Notes, PDF p.3-4
- Do not delay getting the casualty on a litter, since it helps prevent hypothermia to have him off the ground; he does not have to lie on his back, but he must be secured before moving.CLS M20 Slides, PDF p.7-8
- Package the casualty: secure loose bandage ends and hypothermia materials, never cover a tourniquet, and keep the DD Form 1380 attached.CLS M20 Notes, PDF p.4
- For a suspected spinal injury, keep the neck immobilized and the casualty straight when you can, and make sure the litter fits the vehicle.CLS M20 Notes, PDF p.5
- Walking wounded can help carry litters or provide security, should keep checking their own dressings, and can be guided with a hand on the shoulder in front.CLS M20 Slides, PDF p.12
- Stage casualties in the loading order of the evacuation platform, and record care on a TCCC AAR within 72 hours if the DD Form 1380 was not completed.CLS M20 Notes, PDF p.5-6
